The Naval Ships’ Technical Manual (NSTM) provides technical information to personnel involved in supervision, operation, and maintenance of U.S. Navy ships and submarines. The various chapters and volumes of the NSTM contain detailed administrative and technical instructions that augment other authoritative documents. The instructions are designed to assist ship’s force in the management of ships and shipboard machinery and equipment in order to ensure mission readiness, maximize the service life of each ship, and minimize life cycle costs.
Once on station the attack submarine can be highly visible - in 1991 U.S. Submarines conducted more than 200 port visits to 50 cities around the world - or invisible. The submarine can also be used to land small groups of special operations forces, or to conduct surveillance of an area, or carry out electronic surveillance to gain valuable. The U.S.S Idaho nuclear submarine is currently being built in Connecticut by General Dynamics, this sub will be the 26th in the Virginia Class of submarines. Throughout the Cold War, America's adversaries understood that an attack on the United States, or its deployed forces, risked devastating retaliation by the Navy's technologically advanced and professionally manned submarine force. This exhibit highlights the trying conditions U.S. Navy Sailors endured during this time.
Interesting artifacts in the Covert Submarine Operations exhibit include:
Us Navy Submarine Dimensions
- Replica of a Sturgeon-class nuclear submarine sail.
- Control Room, consisting of navigational equipment from USS Parche (SSN-683) and USS Trepang (SSN-674).
- MK-48 Torpedo
- Models of Soviet Typhoon-class; Delta II-class; and Alfa-class submarines.
- USS Sand Lance's (SSN-660) maneuvering console. The console is shown in three parts: steam-control panel, the reactor panel, and the electrical-distribution panel.
- Life Onboard a Submarine. This portion highlights a crew's mess, showcasing the only Steinway piano to go to sea onboard a U.S. Navy submarine, USS Thomas A. Edison (SSBN-610), a washer and dryer, and a bunk area.
- Damage Control equipment: masks and protective steam-suit.
